At what age did you allow your teenager to start dating?

My son tells me he has a girlfriend and he is 13. Is that on the young side? They just see each other in school. They don't go out on weekends or spend hours on the phone. What do you think?

  • Dating....when they were high school Juniors. Having a girlfriend....they were probably all around 5th or 6th grade when they got their 1st girlfriend which probably lasted about the length of a school day and between then and the 11th grade probably had many "school only girlfriends". Girls they liked & who they "went with" (which entailed passing notes and talking in between kissing and hand holding).

  • What he is calling dating isn't what I call dating. Since they just see each other in school, I would be fine with that. But I would talk to him about what happens next.

  • My son is also 13 but he doesn't have a girlfriend. I think that is too young to be having boy/girl friends. My rule is, he can do group things until 16 and then date.

  • The boyfriend/girlfriend thing isn't really something you can control because since they aren't going out or anything. Honestly at this age, they usually don't even eat lunch together. My parents let me start dating at 16 but once I was about 14 I started doing group things with girls and boys and they were ok with that.

  • I dont think its a bad thing as long as it doesn't get out of that I mean phone calls lastnight throughout the night and the relationship effecting their school work...etc....and as long as its kept on a positive level then it would be so bad. Good luck!

  • My kids aren't old enough to date yet (thank goodness!) but for me, I was allowed to go out on a car date when I was 16. I think I'll probably follow suit with my kids.

  • 15 1/2. I always told her 16 if she was responsible and trustworthy. Turns out she proved to be six months earlier and was interested in dating. She didn't actually date until 16 though.

  • My son was 12 or 13 when he had his first girlfriend. I'm just now (he's a few weeks away from 16) letting him go to the movies and things like that with a girl.

  • I think 16 is a good age.
