  • just let the child know that papa is away for a little while, but please remember that children are very sensitive....just make sure you are there to comfort the child and make their life as easy as you can during this difficult time. Generally, the child will ask questions when they are curious, just make sure to be as honest as you can, but just keep in mind you are talking to a 3 year old....good luck

  • Use simple terms. Keep it to what he can understand.

When I got my divorce, I told her that daddy was going to get a house of his own and she would now have 2 homes. For months, she would ask when daddy was coming home. I just kept telling her that daddy has his own house.

It's hard but don't lead him on to believe that papa will ever come and live with you again. The worst thing that you can do is to give false hope.

  • You tell him the truth. There is no way to tell him without hurting. He is going to bed sad, and that is okay. You will both get through it. Just be honest in a way that is appropriate for a 3 yr old (for example, don't say "Papa got arrested for selling drugs", say "Papa made some bad choices and can't live here any more")

  • You can't.... it'll hurt no matter what, but the impt thing is to show him how he can express his feelings to you openly and feel secure in your love for him.
