  • 42x - 210 +x = -29 -2x +4 [multiply the number in parentheses by each number inside the parentheses)

    43x -210 = -2x -25 [combine numbers with numbers and x's with x's]

    43x + 2x = -25 + 210 [move x's to one side and numbers to the other side of the equals sign]

    45x = 185 [combine like terms again]

    x = 185/45 = 37/9 [divide both sides by the coefficient and then simplify]

  • 42(x-5)+x=-29-2(x-2)

    42x - 210 + x = -29 - 2x + 4 (In this step, we were multiplying the numbers in parentheses)
    43x - 210 = -25 - 2x (In this step, we were combining like terms)
    43x - 210 + 210 = -25 - 2x + 210 (in this step, we were adding 210 to each side so we can start moving the variables to one side)
    43x = 185 - 2x
    43x + 2x = 185 - 2x + 2x (In this step, we are moving the variables to one side)
    45x = 185
    45x/45 = 185/45 (In this step, we are finding out what one x is by dividing by the number of x's we have)
    x = 185/45 (which is then left as a fraction, but simplified to the answer you were given:
    x = 37/9

  • TweenAndTwinMom...it is so much more frustrating when you are working with your own children and they don't understand! I can be very patient with adults and other children, but get frustrated faster with my own!

    It seems like you might be able to google step by step instructions.
