When baby is learning to crawl ~ how did you manage with hardwood floors?

We have an area set up with play mats where she plays with her toys, but when she starts to crawl around more, I'm not sure what we should do, and then in the future, when she starts to pull up and walk, I don't want her falling on the hardwood and hurting herself. Should we confine her to just the space where the mats are and put a play yard up? How sturdy are those and if she pulls up on the play yard, will it stay together and be sturdy? Any suggestions?

  • Nothing but hardwood throughout my house. Kids did fine. Just watch them. Don't stress.

  • Dont worry about it... I have hardwood floors also and I was worried about the when my son started getting around, but he's been fine. the tables have hurt more than the floor has. She'll be fine.

  • Our house is all hardwood floors. My little man is fine. Don't worry, yours will be fine too. My LO has never bruised himself falling onto the floor, but he has bruised himself plenty running into tables and door frames!

  • my house is hardwood floors and tiles downstairs. i didn't have a problem with them getting hurt when they fall down. they learn to use their hands to break their fall. they don't even cry 99% of the time when they fall down. they just get up and keep going.

  • We used a play yard to help keep the child safe while I did house work. I set the yard up wherever I was working- the kitchen, for example. I only put toys in there that could be played with in there, and the children didn't complain. We didn't have trouble when they pulled themselves up.

  • We have all hardwood floors ans all 3 of my kids survived learning to walk and crawl. Just relax! Yes she will fall, but hardwood is really not much worse to fall on than carpet. They are really close to the ground when they fall :-)

  • I'm with everyone else. I have all hardwood floors. She is hurt more buy cofee table and kitchen table than she is by the floors. Honestly she wasn't hurt much at all when she was crawling. When she started walking she only got hurt one time when she fell and busted her lip but that could have happened anywhere. She has fallen outside and gotten hurt worse than she does on the hardwood floors.
