Anyone else have problems when switching from breast milk to formula?

I was supplementing from the beginning. Only a little formula to begin with. Then we gradually started giving him more. Now he is 3 weeks old and is only on formula. But he is having lots of gas pains, is this normal??

  • Possibly. You can try different brands that are designed specifically to combat gasiness. I think my SIL put her kids on soy-based milk and everything worked out.

  • it could be if it's milk based..but ya, they have different formulas for that. maybe try mixing it again, if you can pump some milk. or if it continues try just pumping or BFing for a little while longer while his digestive system is maturing.

  • Unfortunately that is a very common side effect of formula. Breastmilk is MUCH easier and better for baby. Is there anything that anyone of us can help you with to help you continue to give baby the best and make baby feel 100 times better in the process?

  • Kelli, did the frenulum problem defeat you? It's OK. And be aware that unoless you cut your breasts off or baby dies, you CAN go back. Whenever you want. The longer you go the harder it will be but it won't be impossible.

What you describe is normal. When switching to fortmula, you have to play the formula roulette game to find one that works. And be aware... for some babies, NO formula works.
