The puppy I adopted is underweight. She is a chi-mix. What are some ways to help her gain weight quickly?

She's happy, and playful! Very active too! But definitly underweight. I knew before I adopted her she would need some help. I've been feeding her twice a day, but is there anything else that can help? She gets cold easy from not having any weight on her!

  • I would increase the food to 3-4 smaller feedings a day if she is really underweight. You can also get a high calorie supplement called nutrical, and give a little dab of it on your finger, or in the food dish once a day to help her out.

  • Get her a sweater, but as long as she's eating a healthy amount of food (a puppy chihuahua could probably do well with two cups of food for a full day) she'll gain weight over time. Make sure she's eating an appropriate food for puppies of her size group. (Small dog puppy chow.) Suppliment with a half a can of wet puppy food until she starts showing weight gain.

  • Puppies need to be fed 3 times a day. If they are underweight then do 1-2 cups of puppy food (has to be puppy food it has more in it for puppies) and one can of soft food. You can also give them peanut butter! My vet 1-2 tablespoons twice a day was a great way to add weight to a puppy because its high in protein, calories and fat.
I also make satin balls for them. You can google it there are several recipes online for satin balls.

  • She has a sweater, and a coat as well. I'm already doing all that. I was just thinking maybe adding some treats or something? She's really boney!

  • Honestly putting on weight drastically can cause some harm/discomfort. Just feed her a little bit more than recommended and give her a snack her and there and she will put on weight in no time.

  • The paperwork from the vets office that the rescue uses says she needs to put weight on right away.

  • I agree, just feed her a little more than the bag says. If you overfeed her, she will just poop it out or get diarrhea. Also, be sure you are feeding a high quality puppy food...NOTHING by Purina, Pedigree, Iams/Eukanuba, Science Diet, Ol' Roy, etc. Those brands are all craptastic! You can check out this website for a high quality brand:

  • Thats a good idea spotted! Yes she is truly underweight. She has sagging skin and you can feel her bones. She is gorgeous, and sweet, but really needs the weight on her.
