Rep. Betty McCollum, DEM from Minnesota is trying to get rid of the Pentagon's sponsorships for NASCAR teams. She says she won't back away from her efforts and despite GOP resistance, will broaden her fight to repeal tax breaks for track owners too. In an interview, McCollum said it doesn't make sense to keep the benefits for NASCAR teams and track owners when other cuts are being made to community health care, programs for homeless veterans and Head Start. Racetrack owners received tax breaks woth $45 million in 2010 and 2011, aimed at helping them make improvements to their facilities. A two-year extension of the program was included in the tax cuts compromise that President Obama forged with Congress in December.
The above is from an article that appeared in the local paper (Seattle Times, page A4)..you should be able to find it on-line to read the entire thing. It's interesting that GOP people are going for big cuts in many areas, including education to balance budgets but have no problem with the Defense Dept. sending millions to NASCAR. We are involved in 2 wars, the economy is BAD, people have been losing homes and jobs...so is this REALLY what our Defense Dept should be spending money on????

Yes. The money to NASCAR comes from the DOD's advertising fund. They get a lot of 'bang for their buck' with the car sponsorship since NASCAR is the country's largest spectator sport. The DOD has $9 billion it is prepared to return. It has stream lined some departments and advancements have allowed for the reduction of redundant systems. So, the $11 million spent at the track really isn't much as they are returning $9 bill. Also, how about the 1000 or so jobs those advertisements allow to be had since the teams have to hire about 200 people per team. Go cut some redundant gov't programs that will save billions. That is where they should be looking.

Or cut here instead of NASCAR. There are much better places instead of where some actual real jobs are saved/created instead of just a claim of them.
