So i called tricare today to see if they covered the no-needle vasectomy...

and this is how it went:

Me: Hi, i was wondering if Tricare covers the no-needle vasectomy.
Her:Dead Silence (i mean so dead there wasn't even anything in the background)
Her: Th-the what?
Me: The no-needle vasectomy
Her: again, dead silence
Me: Are you there?
Her: Um, has the doctor given you a code or anything (ok i don't know about you, but i've never heard of a doctor giving you a code...)
Me: No....
Her: well in order to know what we cover you have to have a code.

Well, what the hell? how does an insurance company not know what they cover? all i want to know is, will they cover it, so that my husband can get it. anyone else know?

  • Talk to the PCM they will be more helpful than Tricare who rarely knows what they are talking about.

  • I called Tricare the other day to ask if something was covered and I didn't have to give them a code. The person that you were talking to was an idiot and didn't understand what you were talking about, and didn't want to take the time to find out. You should call again and you will get somebody else that will hopefully know what they are talking about. If not I agree with, ask your PCM. If that fails maybe try their website??

  • I took a medical office course. What they are asking for is a code (DUH! lol). Everything in the medical field from procedures to diagnoses to equipment is done in codes when it comes to insurance and insurance companies. Call the billing office of your local doctor and they can tell you what the code would be for the procedure. Most insurace companies that cover medical should be able to do the same. If all else fails, call the hospital and ask for billing, and then ask for the Medical Coding Person. They can give you the information you need.

  • Maybe you called the wrong number, maybe the person you talked to usually deals with medical offices that already know the codes?

  • A "no needle vasectomy" is not the correct name of the medical procedure. They didn't know what you were asking about. The insurance company needs correct terminology or the code of the procedure for them to correctly answer you. And if you aren't sure what is meant by "code"...just look at the paper that your doctor gives you to take up to the front desk....everything he/she did at that appointment is checked off on that sheet ...and there is an insurance billing code next to it.
