How can I get the musty smell out of A basement?

I have an elderly lady that I clean for. She has a relatively new home. Her basement is open to the rest of the house but is smells like a musty basement. She asked me how to get the smell out. I was looking for a "home remedy" to use if anyone has one.

  • put white vinegar down there, and some salt. the vinegar will get rid of the smell and the salt will absorb the wetness that is most likely causing the smell. good luck

  • something much cheaper than a dehumidifier is damp rid, it soaks up the moisture in the air and gets rid of the smell. Its only $3 and lasts 45 days

  • Put bowels of "cloudy ammonia" all around the basement and let them sit for a few days. The musty oder will be gone. This also works for smoke damage from fires or homes people smoke in allot.
