Babysitter $

How much should I pay someone for afterschool care? I just took my 9 yr old there for 1 day. I sent a snack with her and she will be there for 1 1/2 hrs. I usually pay $25 for the whole day (with teens) but I hate to pick her up and just give the lady $5. The girl is 26 and has 1 baby. She is a new friend of the family.

  • Do you have to pay daily? I'd pay $25/week for that service. Pay her every Friday. She only has your kid for 1.5 hours a DAY. That is nothing. I used to pay $26/DAY for 9 hours of care, and my DCP provided all food and snack, activities, etc.

  • Id ask her how much she wants. I know our neighborhood after school sitter takes kids after school (picks them up), feeds them and sends them home by 6pm and charges $75 a week per kid. I would try and go from that which is $15 a day for 4 hours.

  • Babysitting by me goes for about $15/hour for the first child. About $20-25 for multiple kids.
I'd give her at least $15. Just ask her what she wants, it would make it easier.

  • Is this one day a week? Or 1 1/2 daily? For me.......if it was one day a week and I felt my daughter was safe and comfortable.....I'd give her 15 or 20 bucks.

  • So 12.5 hours a week, I'd say 30-40$

  • Well she is only going this 1 day for 1 1/2 hrs. I may ask her to watch her in the future and i provided food. The only thing I could base it on is $25/day is the going rate here. I am planning on giving her $10 today...I just felt like the "going rate" only made 1 1/2 hours woth $5 or $6 which is too low for drop in service. I would like to use her in the future but I guess we can negotiate a day rate if my dd goes for longer periods of time in the future..kwim?

  • Jessica~I can't imagine anyone paying $15/hour. When I pay teens $25/day their parents say I am paying them too much. My neighbors in home day care used to charge $20/day and she provided food!!!

  • $10 per hour is standard for a college student or other adult watching a kid here. It's what I pay (and she's wonderful, I think it's a bargain).
