Neighbor woes....Mostly a vent....

Is there anything I can do about our grouchy downstairs neighbor? He never talks, never makes eye contact, but when our son is playing in the living room he bangs on his ceiling to tell us to shut up. Our son is ten months old and will just be crawling across the floor with a plastic cup in one hand, making a tap, tap, tap, as he crawls. It's not very loud, so I don't see the problem. We are renting our unit and just signed a new lease, so moving is not an option, besides the place is close to my husband's job and the rent is really good. The grouch bought his unit a long time ago ( we moved in over a year ago ) and paid over 100,000 for it. My thought is if he wanted perfect peace and quiet he should have bought a crappy little trailer out in the woods and lived in solitude out there. Instead, he chose to buy a unit in a fourplex with a neighbor above him and on the side of him, and another above the one on his side, knowing he had no control over who moved in. The other upstairs neighbor is extremely loud and vulgar, swearing and yelling at all hours of the day and night, and he has a problem with our baby carrying a cup across the floor? Everyone is telling me to give our son the pots and pans and let him hear some REAL noise, but I feel bad for him, in spite of his being a jerk. He obviously has no people skills, and is actually suffering from cancer right now ( not a surprise, either, he smokes like a freakin' chimney!!) and is generally not a very healthy person. He's small and frail looking, and roughly 70 years old. I wouldn't want my grandfather to be upset by his neighbors, but there's not much we can do about the noise level. We put a throw rug over the wood floor in the living room, but we don't own the place and aren't going to pay to put in a carpet. The rest of the unit is tiled, and it's not insulated very well. I hear his smoker's cough all night long ( but I don't bang on the floor, lol). Plus I really don't think we are making THAT much noise.....Sigh...Don't know what to do, but his attitude is getting worst and I'm just waiting for the cops to come some time at night because our cats were playing to loud....Hopefully they will be understanding cops and can actually talk some sense into him.....

  • I had a neighbor move in at our old apartment after we did upstairs and her kids made alot of noise, where we did not. I called the PD on her time and again. So be thankful he may be cranky and old but isnt calling the cops on you. Obviously it must not be all that loud then? I had a woman with SIX kids above me who yelled and screamed constantly and let her little animals run, jump, scream until all hours of the night and day.

  • Tell him to sound proof his ceiling !Sounds like he is lonely to me.Going to get attention some way.I live for a while below a very obese woman.Every step she took sounded like she was coming through!I never complained but i could tell you exactly where she was all the time.

  • LOL!! That's funny in a sad way :) When I was pregnant with my son I could tell you what room the neighbor was in from the ciggarette stench coming through the floor. Super preggie sense of smell :) My hubby taped up every crack in the walls and the smell went away finally.

  • He's dying. How much longer you think he's gonna last? Wait him out, knowing full well his crabbyness is because he's upset he's dying. OR....Knock on his door and tell him to get a fucking grip old man!! Its a baby! and you WONT restrict his movements to please an unhappy person. There are WAY to many crappy asses in this world. When you rent in cheap housing the neighbors noise is ALWAYS a problem. Deal with it or buy your own home and deal with asshole neighbors.

  • that sucks I don't think there is much ya can do unless ya move, maybe one day just flat out confront him in the nicest way possible I would...if it works it does, if it doesn't it doesn't at least ya tried & that miserable person is aware of your thoughts & feelings.

  • He had to deal with your baby making noise and you have to deal with him complaining about it. The joys of sharing walls.
