How old was your toddler when they started using forks and spoons? (Kids plastic sized utensils)

My son Joey just turned 19 months and I am curious how old other children were when they first started using the plastic forks and spoons.

  • We started giving him a spoon around 9 months-ish, but at 2.5 years he'd still rather use his hands :0)

  • Sometime around a year when he was really starting to feed himself at every meal.

  • I just started giving my son plastic utensils. He can't really pick his food up with them, but he puts the food on the spoon/fork by hand and then puts it in his mouth.

  • My youngest has been eating with a fork and spoon since she was about 16/17 months old. That's without spilling. Before that she would use it a couple times then finish with her hands. By 18 months she ate like a pro. I don't remember hold old my other kids were but they were at least 2.

  • Ethan has had silverware since he was a baby. I always gave him his own spoon when I was feeding him. After he had eaten most of the food I would let him "feed" him self. He is now 28 months and uses a fork perfectly and a spoon as long as it is food that sticks to it. That works for us because he will not eat "wet" foods like soup or cereal with milk.

  • My son used a spoon at about 1 yr but at 2 we are still working on the fork.

  • My son used a spoon at about 8 or 9 months and he finally got the hang of stabbing with a fork at about 1 yr.
