  • God parent is a religious designation not a legal one. It means that that person is responsible for the moral and spiritual upbringing of the child.

  • You become a godparent by being selected by the parents to serve in that capacity. It has to do with religious education.

Godparents have no legal rights. If he's asking about guardian, again, that's up to the PARENTS.

  • If you are wondering how you would become the legal guardian in case of tragedy, then that would be done through a will to the best of my knowledge.

  • If you mean officially, not legally, you do it through the church that the child's family belongs to, typically during a baptism ceremony.

I know some people choose god parents based on who they would want to get their children should they pass away. If this is what you are referring to, it would need to be done through courts.

  • my friend was made the godfather of the kids but has nothing in writing. the parents of the kids are not taking care of them like they should so he wants to make sure that if the kids get taken away that they are given to him.

  • There isn't anything in writing, legally, when you become a godparent, other then a baptism certificate. He needs to ask the parents to legally name him as guardian should something happen to them. It's up to the parents.

  • A "godfather" is not a legal co-parenting position. If the children are removed he will have to petition the court to get them. Unfortunately blood relatives come first and then friends.

  • As others have said, godparent is nothing legal. it is more of an honor given by the parents at a baptism/christening. Being a guardian is a legal designation but it has to be given through a legal document or the courts.

  • Being a godparent is NOT a legal thing, it is a religious thing. A godparent has NO RIGHTS. Your friend can TRY and petition the courts for custody but that doesn't mean he will get it just because he is a godparent.
