  • Yes we are military and no we are not recieving the tablets. As far as I know we have less then 20 milirems (I think that is what it was called) in our air. From what I have read anything less then 50 is not harmful. Also, we would recieve more radiation of a single flight from Tokyo to New York city then we have in our air now! As of now thy are evacuating withing a 30 km radius while the US embassy is evacuating US citizens withing a 50 km radius for extra precaution! We are app. 200 km away!

  • Just heard on our local news there are people here in MI that are buying the iodine tablets!!! If any americans should be concerned, it would be the Hawaiian Islands!! Even that can be considered a stretch! Some people need to go and look up radiation and nuclear energy and why its still is a good idea to have nuclear energy because its cleaner and in a way, alot cheaper. Just don't build the plants on a fault line like the citzens did in Cali.

  • In case anybody was wondering, there have been at least five meltdowns in the history of the United States. All are widely called "partial meltdowns". Makes u feel are safe and snuggly huh??? lol

  • My step dad was a nuclear engineer at a nuke plant in Nebraska. He has told me there are 2 different types of nuclear meltdowns. Here a 'definition' from the book he has..."A nuclear meltdown is an informal term for a severe nuclear reactor accident that results in core damage from overheating. The term is not officially defined by the International Atomic Energy Agency or by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. However, it has been defined to mean the accidental melting of the core of a nuclear reactor, and is in common usage a reference to the core's either complete or partial collapse. "Core melt accident" and "partial core melt" are the analogous technical terms, though the severity of these nuclear accidents can vary in the extreme. A meltdown is considered very serious because of the potential that highly intense radioactive materials with long half-lives and lethal threat could be released into the environment.

  • I have so much respect for the people in Japan. Lines everywhere and no one fighting looting etc. I agree with Ilovecade, I do believe that folks are overreacting here in the N.W. I live in Oregon, I work in a pharmacy and the phones were ringing off the hook, people lined up at the counter, wanting to purchase Potassium Iodide and masks! Sold out of masks and we don't carry Potassium Iodide. Can't get it because there's a shortage of it. I think we'll be fine. Just pray for the Japanese and our military over there who are flying in supplies to help these folks out.

  • Sorry to come in again, but I just read a report saying that it would only go as far as 30 km out from the factory IF a meltdown were to occur. And I have read multiple times that it would travel across the ocean but it would not reach the US west coast, it would dispease into the air.
