Why does my son vomit just before making a developmental leap?

My youngest child is 4 years old. We have noticed something of a strange pattern with him. It usually goes something like this: He'll wake up in the middle of the night/EARLY morning, and one of two things happens-he's awake for the rest of the day, or he spends the remainder of the night throwing up. Then, after the chaos subsides, we notice significant leaps forward in his development...improved speech, leaps forward toward reading, etc.

Has anyone else experienced this with their child/ren? Any idea why a developmental leap could cause my child to be so ill beforehand?
