Hitting me

my son has started hitting me. what can i do to make him stop?

  • Hit him back so he understand how it feels. Just like biting, if you bite them back and it hurts they almost always stop biting others.

  • State firmly and without anger that it is not allowed. Anticipate it and hold his arm when you say it. If he is 3-4 then time out should help too.

  • I think biting and hitting a child is disgusting. My kids don't bite. They went through a little phase when they were infants, but we got them out of that. For hitting, we do time out. If he hits, he goes to time out for 5 minutes. Before he sits (because he is 5), we explain to him in detail why he is in time out. When he gets out, we talk about what he did wrong. We have a 5-10 minute conversation about hitting and why it's wrong. He asks questions, we ask questions. He has stopped hitting so much and is beginning to think about his actions before he does something.
