  • We had a Rat Terrier. Although she never bit anyone, she didn't really like kids either. Smaller dogs are typically more nervous around children because children like to grab and tug and they really don't like that. I would suggest contacting a breeder or getting a book about the breed to get some detailed information.

  • From my experience, small dogs are very territorial and not very good with kids. My sister has a German Sheppard mix dog, and she is the best dog with kids. Her kids are 4, 5, and 7 and the dog will let those boys climb on top of her, pull her tail, ride her (like a horse), and pretty much whatever they want, she has never bit or even snapped at them. And she has protected them from other dogs also. If you want a kid-friendly dog, I would look into getting a medium sized to larger dog.

  • I've been around Rat Terriers a good bit, and a lot of it is how you raise them. They are naturally very hyper dogs, though, and as a puppy, it's probably going to drive you nuts running around the house and playing all the time. lol As an adult, though, they typically are more nervous than bigger dogs, and can snap or nip at kids for messing with them when they don't want to be messed with. They are generally good dogs, though.

  • They bark, they chase, they nip, they are TERRIERS in ever sense of the word. If you have neighbors you would like to regaurd I wouldn't get one. A lab can be just as fun. They aren't barkers and they love to play they have lots of energy that 5 kids can have fun with.
