  • There are many reasons why a baby may not move as much as it once did. A new position may put baby in less contact with your stomach. A sleepy baby doesn't move as much, especially during a growth spurt. As you get closer to the due date, there is less room for movement and the movements will be less forceful. If you have been very active recently, sometimes it's less obvious when the baby does move (mama movement seems to put some babies to sleep!)

Drink a glass of orange juice and then lie quietly on your left side for an hour. During that time, you should feel the baby move. You can also start keeping track of your baby's movements. During the time of day that she's normally the most active, mark down how many times you feel any movement. You should be able to record at least 8 movements during that active time.

If you are concerned, call your OB. A good OB will never resent a worried mama who wants to make sure that everything is ok with her baby.

  • Keep in mind that in the last months of pregnancy, the baby doesn't have very much room to kick - so it may seem like she isn't kicking at all.

    Here's what you do:
-Drink a glass of orange juice or other cold, sweet juice
-Take a look at a clock and note what time it is
-Lay down on your left side
-Every time you feel any movement - a flutter, a kick, a wiggle, a roll - ANYTHING - count it
-When you reach 10 "movements", look at the clock again.

If it has been less than an hour, she's doing fine.

If it has been more than an hour, give your doctor's office a call and let them know what you did and the results. They may want you to recount, they may say your results are fine, they may want to see you.

  • My daughter use to be very active then stopped at the start of the 3rd trimester. She was getting older and bigger and changing right inside of me! The only time I could feel her move then was after I ate and, of course, as soon as I wanted to fall asleep! :)
