Why did we launch missiles in Libya if there was a cease-fire?

I'm really confused. Anyone care to explain?

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libyan_no-fly_zone  -- Qadaffi broke the cease-fire first, and the UN said it was OK to shoot.  That's how I understand it.  So far it is the US, British and French forces.  Don't feel bad about asking the question--if you'd heard there was a cease-fire and then heard that people were shooting, it would be confusing.

  • The cease fire was made by the Libya government. Obviously Gadhafi didn't get the message. The French verified that crimes were still being committed and were the first to send air power.
I feel for these people, being shot upon by their own government but we just don't have the money to be in a long term mission now.
I don't even care if we fly around in the air over Libya and even drop a few bombs but that's is the limit to what we should be doing. I'd prefer to be helping deliver aid that Gadhafi is refusing to let through and giving moral support to the French and British and others who first wanted the no fly zone. We have to know when to stop. Like Obama said, we are no longer the ones to fix everyone's problems.
For now, at least he got that right.

  • Ghadaffi said there was a cease fire and then sent planes to fire on his own citizens THEN said the plane that was shot down wasn't. He is killing his own people. Their gov't isn't protecting them. This is the best use of the U. N. I can think of.

  • Easily explained. Ghadaffi never stopped killing his people, there was no cease fire. He lied.

  • They, (British, French, U.S.A and whoever else) under the U.N. are instiuting a NO-FLY ZONE. In order to do that, the planes, anit-aircraft guns, etc of the opposition forces (Ghadaffi) have to be taken out. Best way to do that...missles, etc. Once they feel they've taken out or severly limited Ghadaffi's ability to fight using planes, anti-aircraft guns, etc...they will patrol the No-Fly Zone area to make sure it stays a no-fly zone. Everyone was saying they needed to institute a no-fly zone but I don't think they all understood the military action that would have to take place in order to do it. Anyway, that's the reason for the missles.
