Why is Chicago called the Windy City if we are not always windy?

  • yeah its bc of downtown. the way the buildings are it creates insane wind tunnels. I HATED going to school downtown. on days where there was wind advisories you could hardly even walk! There was a few times that I was actually literally blown into the street by the wind (luckily I wasnt the only one so I didnt feel too stupid lol)

  • Chicago is actually called the Windy City because of the Worlds Fair. Many people said the politicians were full of air, wind bags. Hence the City of Wind. It's from the book Devil in the White City, good book...

  • Navgur76l is right, and it is a very good book. Erik Larson, I believe. Worth checking out, especially if you're a Chicagoan and/or a history nerd.

  • Very true chicago is called windy city because of all the bull the politicians talked. So any one wants to be claimed as the windy city for actual wind go right ahead

  • I grew up in Chicago and we never learned that in any history taught about Chicago. I didn't know it was because of the  "wind bags" until I read Devil in the White City.
