What do you do to make yourself feel better when you have a bad cold?

I have tried sudafed, hot tea, chicken soup, emergen-C. Nothing is helping. Any advice?

  • I'm still getting over mine. I drank alot of Theraflu and brewed it with a bag of green tea. It helped temporarily. I also used Zicam nasal spray to help me breathe, temporarily. A hot bath/shower feels good too. I'm still hacking up the leftovers and nothing it working on that! They used to make these things call "shower soothers" which were basically dissolvable tablets that you dropped into a hot shower and they released menthol vapors into the steam. They were amazing but I can't find them anywhere anymore! Anyway, hope you feel better soon.

  • I use Vicks VapoRub like crazy when I have a cold. It helps clear my nasal passages and make me feel semi-normal. I kind of like the Alka-Seltzer cold tablets too, when I finally break down and take medicine.

  • Thanks ladies! I haven't used Vicks VapoRub since I was a kid. I'll give it a shot. I can't take theraflu or alkaseltzer cold med- they are both too strong for me. I feel like I'm on LSD! I am on claritin already, so it's not just allergies. As for sleep, I'm trying to get as much as I can! But it's tough with 2 kids.

  • Tylenol Cold has worked for me. My dr also suggests ginger tea. Take about a thumb-size piece of ginger, boil it in a pot of water for about 15 minutes. Drain off the liquid and add lemon and honey.

  • I don't take medications. I up my vitamin C, vitamin D, and probiotics - all to boost my immune system. I eat raw garlic several times a day (chop it up very fine, let it sit for 5 minutes, then swallow it like a pill w/water ... do NOT chew). Gives me a boost of energy. I use a neti pot to clear my sinuses. Plenty of fluids, tea (I make my own ginger/honey tea), soup, no coffee (weakens the immune system). I'll sometimes do a shot of tobasco to clear my nose. Steamy showers also help. For coughing, I'll rub Vicks Vapor Rub on my feet before bed; does the trick.
