My son is turning 5 next week. I thought as part of his birthday present to give him a weekly allowance. Is this too young? I'm thinking $5 a week for now.
Does your child get an allowance? How much do they get and how old did you start?

  • Yes mine do. My dd just turned 6 and she does get allowance but we obviously hold onto it for her. She gets between $5 a week, and she gets money taken away when she is not behaving or what have you also. My 11 yr old gets $10 a week. At 13 they get $15 a week, and at 15 they get $20 a week.

  • My 9 and 11 yo's get $4/week - $2 to spend/save as they wish and $2 to put in their savings accounts at the credit union. They earn their allowance by doing chores cheerfully without complaining. Their chores have to be done anyway.

  • I always had to earn my allowance by doing my chores. If I did not do my chores I hadn't earned my allowance. My parents didn't "give" me the money.

  • She does not get an allowance, and I am amazed at the amount kids are getting now. I'll have to give up meat to afford it.

  • As long as you are giving him the chance to EARN allowance, sure it is a good idea.

  • They dont have set allowances. We just give them money if they've earned it.
