How long to express milk...??? adult content

Baby is in NICU, so im stuck expressing milk til shes old enough to breastfeed...
does anyone know how often you need to pump?
i know for first couple of days it 2-3 hrs..8-12 times a day.....but for how long do you do that before you change over to a dif schedule? i dont want to dry out before i get to bring her home, and thats another 3 months...
even if you dont express....how often did your baby eat when they were 3 wks old?

  • keep with the same schedule you are using until baby comes home to keep your supple up and ready.. too much is better than to little, you can store up some in the freezer as well so no waste

  • i never had any luck pumping or hand expressing, but to answer your last question, two of them ate every 2 hours, and the third one ate every 4 hours.

  • It's not just the first couple of days - babies eat every couple of hours for quite some time, and especially to keep your supply up while you're stressed you'll want to stick to every 2-3 hours 'round the clock indefinitely.

  • You won't dry out as long as you keep pumping. A women who has never been pregnant, if she tries long enough she can make her body produce milk. So don't worry about drying up. Lol. I'm not sure about the schedule though. Nurses at the hospital should be able to tell you.

  • you need to pump 8-10 times a day as that is how much she will be nursing if she was on the breast. least amount is 6.

  • Until you are nursing regularly, I would stick to every 2 hrs during the day and every 3 hours at night.
