Consigning vs Donating

I have some things to get rid of and would prefer to get money for them, if I can. My mom suggested consignment shops, but I don't know.

Has anyone gone either the consignment route or the donating route with old clothing? With consignment, are they more picky about what they'll take? Or does it depend on the store?

  • Consignment shop will only take new or like new stuff and they take a percentage of what it sells for. Here its 10%

  • Consignment shops are definitly more picky -- our local shops only take designer clothes and they keep from 50 to 60 % of what it sells for! But they do sell for more than you would likely get at a garage sale.

  • Consignment shops are very picky about what they allow. Here I think its an equal 50%.

  • I go to a consignment kids clothing place. They don't pay much, but they give me 20% more if I take it as store credit, which I always do - I definitely prefer to get used stuff than to contribute to the creation (and waste) of lots of new stuff! They also take anything they don't want to purchase, and donate it FOR me, which is super-convenient. And I have the option to go over the pricing for everything and negotiate, if I have time, which I never do.

  • I hate consignment shops I think they are a pain in the a$$, I personally do Ebay because my girls wear a lot of high end expensive stuff and I can get almost half or more out of Ebay then I could any consignment place. I have also had luck placing ads on my Facebook page and have sold a ton that way, I just sold over $100 just on Facebook.

  • Consignment shops are picky- it has to be certain brands, no stains, no cigarette smoke, ect.

I always donate my girls clothing to Appalachain outreach (they give the clothes away for free to families who need it)

  • The percentage depends on the shop
