How many moms here keep chickens?

My DH and I decided to get some chicks this spring, so that when they get bigger we can have eggs! We also plan to sell any extra babies we get at the local farm sale held every weekend. I know it won't be a ton of money, but I'm hoping it will help with the cost of upkeep on the chickens. We got 2 Araucanas, 2 Black Jersey Giants, 2 Rhode Island Reds, and 2 unidentified buff-colored chicks that I believe could be Buff Orpingtons, but may be Golden Laced Wyandottes. Does anyone else here have a little backyard flock, or keep chickens in any capacity?

  • My parents do... they have a farm they have horses, cows, goats and now chicks.... They are doing like you are... using them for eggs, I am not sure what they plan for future chicks but they have almost 80 acres so I am sure it would be alright to keep them all lol

  • We did when I was growing up, then my dad built chicken houses. Now, my dad and my brothers raise chickens. Between all of them they have at any given time 400,000 chickens. They don't lay eggs since they are all roosters, but they are chickens. (The hens go to layer houses.)

  • Nope, but I lived in an area where the chicken and cow population definitely outnumbered the human population. Most people I know have chicken houses and/or cows.

  • We have a cow pasture right across the street from our complex. One of the cows got loose last week and was wandering around in our parking lot- the kids were absolutely thrilled! lol

  • Not yet, but we do plan to get some in the near future. Ours will be used for eggs and meat (yay for naturally grown, antibiotic-free, growth hormone-free, free range eggs/meat).

  • I want chickens BAD but my husband isn't keen on the idea. We have nearly an acre of wooded land and I think they'd do well here but I am kind of worried about the neigbors haha. I love Cochin and Silkies.
