  • Having just purchased a used car under $5000, it's really hard to find a good used car for under $5000.

Use kelley blue books (kbb.com) and reliability ratings/reviews from msn autos, edmunds, or consumer reports (all free online).

Mileage-wise, toyotas, nissans, hondas, and subarus (and older volvos) will last for 250-300K , so 1 of these cars with 175K or less is good. All other cars, don't buy if the car already has over 125K miles, preferably under 80K.

A lot of suvs are on the market real cheap, but they typically get less than 17mpg, so you can afford the car but not the gas. I ended up buying an older subaru, but would have liked a hyundai.

Even if you purchase from a new/used car dealer, take the car to a trusted mechanic - put it on the rack, check for oil/fluid leakage, brakes, rotors, axles, everything. Typical price is $10-50.

Good luck on your car search!

  • Seems like way to many miles and I have heard the PT Cruisers are a headache. they are a Chrysler product. My father worked for chrysler for 37 years and he has had nothing good to say about them.
