How do they test for listeria?

If I request being tested will my doctor do so?

  • Do you have symptoms? Most doc's don't like to test unnecessarily for things...

  • I'm thinking they'll probably do a blood test and/or a stool test (I work in a hospital lab). Are you sick? You'd be vomiting if you are. Do you know the ways to get listeriosis? (FYI, hot dogs, lunchmeats, any processed meats, like pepperoni or salami, smoked meats and fish, soft cheeses such as feta, brie and bleu, pate, unpasteurized milk or juice can all carry listeria and make you sick. If you consume any of these meats or cheeses, make sure they are THOROUGHLY cooked. It's wise to avoid the meats, though, because of the nitrates, too.)
