Makeup and fake nails to elem. school for 10-11 yr olds

Do you let your 9-12 yr old daughters wear make-up / fake nails to school? Also do you approve of what they wear to school before they leave for school?
My DH (and I agree) says NO makeup (except for lip gloss or chap stick) and No fake nails (hes now at the point where just nail polish is allowd) till 15 but SD wont listen and comes home with eyeliner etc. on from her friends they are 10 and 11 yr olds still in elem. school. Also SD trys to wear her new short shorts (not from us lol but from her bday party her friends got her) and skirts to school (skirts are allowd but has to have leggings underneath)
Do you think we are crazy?

  • NO you're not crazy, you're being a good parent. So many of my DD's fellow students are allowed to do such things. I've gotten to know a lot of their parents and they love to spoil their kids rotten and let them pretty much have whatever. Of course, they wouldn't allow them to endanger themselves but I wish they would realize that they are doing more harm than good by not setting standards. Even my DD thinks it's silly to be allowed to wear makeup and fake nails. She also knows how these girls act toward one another in school and its catty and obnoxious. If only a little fly could record the whole day at school and see how these little darlings act. Spoil your kids with love and let these kids be kids. They have the rest of their lives to be adults, right?

  • Nope. Sounds good to me. You need figure out what she values and take it away until she can behave herself. Everything my girls where has to be to their knees unless they have leggings under them. Right now, they are only 5 and 6 though.

  • NO, i think you are GREAT parents for looking out for your kids and making sure they dress their age. There is too much pressure on young kids to act and dress older, it's nice to see parents fighting back against it!

  • She got like 7 packs of fake nails which we say on weekends or holiday vac. she could wear but by monday morning they have to be off for school. She went to school with them on monday i told her next time i take all her nails for 2 weeks. She then goes to school with them on wednesday so i took them. Her friends got her a makeup kit for her bday. We dont want to have to take all her new stuff and said the makeup is for play ONLY if you leave this house you wash your face. We havent had a prob. with her makeup yet but she did come home last week with her friends make up on.

  • You are not crazy. Another reason to be grateful for school uniforms. Skirts an dresses must be at floor level when on their knees. Shorts under at all times. No jewelry except medic alert bracelets and wrist watches and silver or gold ball stud earrings.. They can't even carry chapstick if it says 'medicated" on it. Nail polish can only be pale pink or clear. Personally in our home the rules are pretty strict. When you allow a 10 yr old to flaunt makeup and nails TO SCHOOL what are you teaching her about self esteem, self respect and modesty? Teaching her to wash her face morning and night, wear deoderant every day and washing your hair regularly should be the things they are learning. Not who can put the most goop on their face to look as old as they possibly can. Are they even wearing a bra yet? Some parents can't see the train wreck that is headed for them. Keep doing what you're doing.

  • You are not crazy. If she doesn't do what you ask her too, take it away. I say that she needs to learn to tell her friends no when they give her their make up at school.
