What is your deal breaker issue for a presidential candidate?

There are a lot of things we're willing to hold our nose and vote for someone simply out of the lesser of two evils situation we're often faced with on election day, but what's the one thing that no matter how much you hate the other option, you just can't stomach voting for?

  • I'm not sure if I have one specific issue that's THE deal breaker, but I would not vote for someone who is socially conservative or from the religious right. Basically anyone who gives me the impression that they would not protect everyone's human rights or protect everyone under the First Amendment (not just the majority views).

I think it's easier for me to pinpoint a few issues that are not deal breakers, for example, I'm generally against the death penalty, but I don't think it's a deal breaker for a candidate to be pro-death penalty if I agreed with most of their other stances. I usually see room for compromise with someone who is socially moderate, but fiscally conservative, so I think it's the socially conservative people that I can't stomach.

  • Hmm - you've really stumped me. I can't think of any one thing that would be a deal breaker for me. I'll keep thinking on this....
