  • You don't give an age, but is he too old to play on playground equipment? Anything that gets him moving is good. Can he join the town's sports team? Usually there is something town sponsored in the spring. And make sure you buy only healthy food for meals and snacks. GL

  • There are lots of fun ways to get your family up and about. It’s so easy to make it part of your daily routine and habits. Here are a few suggestions:
    The lamp-post game
    When going to school or the shops, a simple race game between the lampposts not only gets them to the destination quicker and passes the time, but it also keeps them fit! (Make sure your kids are road aware.)
    Recycle bowling
    Play this with 6 or 10 empty plastic bottles or milk containers. Line them up and throw a tennis ball or rolled up sock at them to see how many you can knock over!
    Treasure hunts
    Treasure hunts are great fun, easy to organise and the kids can do them in lots of different places. For example:
    Things to find in the park:
    * A buttercup
    * A long stick
    * A leaf with more than one colour in it
    * A very long piece of grass
    Once they’ve found all these, help them tie the objects to a stick to

  • Things to find in the supermarket

    * Something yellow
    * A kiwi fruit
    * The fish counter
    * Something from your shopping list

    Remember to take this with you next time you go to the supermarket. If you have two or more children, why don’t you have a competition to see who can find things the quickest?

  • try having no processed foods in the home, and try having lots of veggies cut up for quick snacks.

  • I would say put him in a sport or karate, and makeover the meals and snacks so that there are no pre-packaged foods, more lean meat, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Oh yeah, and pay attention to portion sizes. When he asks why there is no "good food" anymore, tell him you are trying to have the whole family eat healthy. I was a slightly overweight kid, and the worse thing in the world was being singled out for the reason why there was no "good food" in the house.

  • Get the kid OFF the couch or computer. Take an active role in getting him exercise. Go for walks with him. Play soccer, or baseball. Do NOT give him soda's and high sugar juices and cut out the junk food and or snacking between meals. Portion his food on his plate for him so he doesn't overeat. This all wont be easy, because lets face it, it breaks your heart when a child whines that he's hungry and you refuse to give in.
