Where does the expression "it's raining cats and dogs"come from?

  • its funny because my kids and I were at Plymouth Plantation and they told us the expersion comes from when the cats and dogs would go into the rafters to stay warm. Then when it would rain they would slip out of the rafters so it looked like it was raining cats and dogs..not sure if that is were it comes from or not.

  • The version I heard was that back before they discovered the concept of proper drainage in city street, they'd flood every time it rained.  After particularly heavy rains, the bodies of drowned strays would be found about the city.  I'll have to check, but I think we learned that while playing Origins.  This is probably one of those things with no definitive starting point. =[
