  • When they're too big for a convertible car seat. It depends on the seat, and your child. But in general, about 4.

  • Depends on their size. I had my son in one when he was 3 or 3 and a half. My dd got into one around the same age.

  • this is the seat my dd has, she has been using it since she was 3, but she was over 30lbs....she's still in it with the back attached and she is 4, will be 5 in july i have no plans to take the back off any time soon

  • It depends on the laws of your state. Most definitely, not under 4yrs old. Try to go as long as possible in a 5pt harness seat. If your child is older than 4, you can try booster training. Buy it for your dh car and they can practice riding in the seat there. They should be able to sit properly without slouching.

  • I'd say AT LEAST 5. However, my daughter is 5 and I wouldn't have her in that seat because there's no 5-point harness.

  • I'd keep my kid in a 5 point harness as long as possible, which for some seats can be 65 or even 80 pounds.

  • i think all kids should be in car seat ttil 5 years old

Answer by mbaca at 11:39 AM on Mar. 30, 2011

  • Bare minimum 4 years and 40 pounds, but usually kids are not mature enough to sit in those seats correctly 100% of the time until they are around 5 or 6. My 4 1/-2 year-old, 44 pounds and 44 1/2 inch daughter still rides in a harnessed seat b/c she is not mature enough to handle a booster seat and not slouch, turn around, bend down, fall asleep and slump, etc., as most kids her age aren't. She will start booster training, though, at 5.
