How long have you/your spouse been in the service and what is their rank?

I have a family member joining, and I am curious about how long it takes to rise in ranks. Thank you ahead of time!

  • E-5, 3.5 years. He's also a reservist, so I don't know if that makes any difference.

  • E-5 7 years, he got into some trouble in his early years in the Army. Took a while for him to up his rank. Now that he has a good head on his shoulders and is taking his job more seriously, he will be looking at his E-6 very soon.

  • He is infantry

  • DH is Army Infantry. He has been in 3 years and 4 months maybe. He went in as an E3 in basic, was promoted to an E4 after about a year, and he is working hard on his E5 but some unit politics are getting in the way. It really depends on MOS and points/avaliability once you get to a certain rank.

  • 0-4 (soon to be 0-5)... Enlisted as A1C at 18, went through college while enlisted and was commissioned as an officer 8 years later... Has worked his way up to earn 2 masters degrees and possibly start doctorate by O-6.... Every time he earns a higher degree, he 'owes' the military so many years commitment.. He is eligible to retire before he turns 40...

  • My husband has served 16 yrs and is an O-6. He was ROTC in college and went in as an officer. One of his promotions was under the zone. He plans to serve more than 20 yrs.

  • E-5 National Guard. 8 years, would be an e6 by now but his unit was very cliquey and would not promote him.

  • Mine is Army. He's Aviation (powertrain/NDI), re-classed from Infantry. He is an E-6 with 18 years in. The promotions go by points, NOT by how well you know your job. They look at PT scores, schools (which he has so many it's not funny), and other stuff. They don't have to actually be good at their job to get promoted, trust me. The promotions scores differ for the MOS's. And it's all different for each branch.
