Why do you think the divorce rate is so high in this country?

I think about this a lot, just curious what the opinions of others are.

  • I kind of think it's because for whatever reason, people just arent taking marriage seriously anymore....it's so easy to call it quits, it's hard to make it work and maybe some people have gotten lazy and don't want to do the work...I understand that some people are in terrible positions and divorce is the only option but I doubt that takes place 50% of the time

  • Because disvorce is so widely accepted now when compared to 50-60 years ago. I think there are a lot of girls/women who get married for the "wedding" they get to have and not so much for the "marriage" part of the deal.

  • Finances, marrying for the wrong reasons, (get away from parents, immigration status, in love before understanding what commitment means) not wanting to work thru difficult issues

  • Mainly financial, and infidelity. More people do the right thing now- leave- when they are cheated on, rather than allow it to continue.

More women leave their abusers now than they did 60 years ago- we have laws in place to protect us now that we didn't before.

  • Because they wait to long to find solutions to problems they encounter, a lot of us are very independent, and this sometimes stands in the way of asking for help. People are too quick seeking comfort in someone else when things aren't working out. We have become a disposable society where if one doesn't work we find another who will, sad, very sad.

  • A couple reasons...people rush for a "wedding" rather than considering what type of life they will realistically be able to have together (finances, how they will raise children, religion, where they will live, what habits the other has, etc)...then when things don't line up, they're screwed.

Second, a general lack of commitment to anything in our society. How many people do you know who have started school, then quit...started a job, and quit right away, etc. I think sometimes we get into this "yes man" mentality about telling each other how we shouldn't be anywhere we are unhappy, "life is too short", if it is uncomfortable or takes work, don't do it...when you have friends nodding along with you the second you are unhappy telling you to abandon the situation, it just promotes lack of commitment.
