Shouldn't babies roll from front to back first?

My daughter is almost 4mos. She's rolling from back to front with no issue. But she can't seem to get front to back down... Isn't that backwards?

  • Traditionally, yes but only because babies used to be laid on their tummy more so they had more practice that way. Now that babies are being laid down on their back, that's the position they have more practice with. Two of mine rolled from back to front first, the other three rolled from front to back. She'll get the other way soon!

  • My kids have all always been put on their bellies. I lay my kids on their backs normally unless they are being changed. She sleeps on her belly and spends most of her day there, but she simply isn't rolling. Put her on her back for 10 seconds and she'll roll to her belly...

  • My kids all rolled from back to front first. I don't think it matters.

  • All 5 of mine rolled back to front first because they spent a majority of their time on their back. They were only on their tummies for a few minutes at a time spread out through the day. Naturally they had much more time to perfect rolling from back to front.
My older son went all the way over his first try at 3 1/2 months (back to front to back in one go). But the others took about a week ti figure out how to go from front to back after getting onto their tummies. My other 2 girls started around 5 months and my youngest dd at 3 months (exactly). My youngest started at 3 1/2 months like his older brother.

  • She's been rolling back to front for about a month. But like I said she's rarely on her back, which is what i don't understand. I don't put her on her back EVER unless she's being changed or cleaned...

  • I do believe that it's back to front first. DD rolls from her back to front on her left side, then from her front to back on the left side again...she hasn't quiet figured out that she can roll the other direction yet!

  • My DD never liked tummy time until recently, so it makes sense why she goes back to front. Now whens he rolls, she'll get tired of holding her head up and just face plant lol.
