Does anyone else grind their own meat?

We just started doing it and I'm not really sure if it is more cost effective, but they meat seems to taste better.

  • We used to buy cheap roasts, grind them up. But you have to get a special fat from the butcher to make it stick together if you want patties or the like. Most of them don't charge for the fat. But, you can regulate how much fat is in your hamburger.

  • We do. Mostly venison. It's generally better for you and since we generally killed the deer, for us it is more cost effectivr. You can use ground vinison the same as beef in most recipies.

  • Some if it, yes. Deer meat, mainly. If we ground our own beef, instead of buying it ground, it would save us a lot - but then again, we buy a whole (live) animal, bring it to the locker (butcher), and order it - so much hamburger, so many steaks/roasts, etc. It would be cheaper if we did more roasts or didn't have them grind the trimmings.
