What causes white stool aside from liver problems?

my 2.5 year old has white stool and he screams in pain when he tries to go potty. we spent 6 hours at the ER today. They ran some basic blood tests and everything came back ok (liver). We have to go back to his dr. tomorrow and see what else they might want to run as far as tests.

just looking for ideas I guess. this is the 4th day his stool has been white. it's gone from runny, to hard, to soft.

Medical conditions that may cause light-colored or white stool include:
    - Liver infections, such as hepatitis
    - Biliary cirrhosis
    - Gallstones
    - Anatomic abnormalities of the intestines or bile ducts present at birth (congenital)
    - Inborn errors of metabolism
    - Sclerosing cholangitis
    - Narrowing (strictures) of bile ducts
    - Cysts
    - Tumors
    - A side effect of certain medications, such as some antibiotics, antifungal drugs and antacids

White stool at any age is not normal and should be evaluated promptly by a doctor. White stool is caused by a lack of bile, which may indicate a serious underlying problem in the liver, gallbladder or small intestine.

Bile is a digestive fluid produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder.

  • hmm, i hope they find out the cause. did they just do bloodtests or did they also do an ultrasound and try to see if there is something abnormal? it sounds like a blockage in the gallbladder or somewhere around there....hope they find out and soon!
