Offensive Song S/O - How about this one?

So, now I'm curious if Christians (or anyone else) would find Tom Waits' song "Chocolate Jesus" offensive.

Here are the lyrics, however, I would recommend watching the video above (live on Letterman), for the comments he makes before the song.

Chocolate Jesus - Tom Waits

Well I don't go to church on Sunday
Don't get on my knees to pray
Don't memorize the books of the Bible
I got my own special way
I know Jesus loves me
Maybe just a little bit more
I fall down on my knees every Sunday
At Zerelda Lee's candy store

Well it's got to be a chocolate Jesus
Make me feel good inside
Got to be a chocolate Jesus
Keep me satisfied

Well I don't want no Anna Zabba
Don't want no Almond Joy
There ain't nothing better
Suitable for this boy
Well it's the only thing
That can pick me up
Better than a cup of gold
See only a chocolate Jesus
Can satisfy my soul

When the weather gets rough
And it's whiskey in the shade
It's best to wrap your savior
Up in cellophane
He flows like the big muddy
But that's ok
Pour him over ice cream
For a nice parfait

Well it's got to be a chocolate Jesus
Good enough for me
Got to be a chocolate Jesus
Good enough for me

Well it's got to be a chocolate Jesus
Make me feel so good inside
Got to be a chocolate Jesus
Keep me satisfied

  • Not offended by far. Amussed. But then again I think the idea of a white boy Jesus is absurd. Geographically the dude was some shade of brown if not super black. Chocolate Jesus sounds fine to me.

  • I think it is funny. I think God has a sense of humor and would find it funny too.

  • @Anonymous, above, please don't make anti-Muslim generalizations - you have no clue what you're talking about. You know they worship the same God you do, if you're Christian?? There are extremists in EVERY (yes every) religion. Extremeists are bad. Not Muslims.

  • It sort of reminds me of this song.

"I don't care if it rains or freezes,

'Long as I got my plastic Jesus."

I never knew all of the lyrics until I checked it out on line.  My husband would sing that refrain whenever he'd see Jesus bumper stickers. . .

  • it ticks me off when people take everything to seriously.
I mean its gotten to the point where you have to be sooo politically correct and cant do or say anything b/c it will hurt someones feelings. However, if this was written about Allah, then you would have had people bombing you!
So no it does not offend me as a Christian, but I do see double standards wehn dealing with Christianity as opposed to other religions.

  • Thanks for the responses so far. Being an atheist, the first time I heard this song I found it hilarious. Of course, I'm the kind of person who giggles at the thought of "zombie Jesus", which I know offends quite a few people... so I wasn't sure how "off" my sense of humor is about the subject, and I've always been curious to know what Christians think about that song.
