How can I decongest my kids?

I have 4 kids ranging from 4-9, and they are all congested - nothing else is wrong, but they are stuffed up to varying degrees. They're all on childrens Claritin but it's not helping, so I don't know if this is allergies or a cold with no other symptoms. What, besides a hot steamy menthol shower, will help clear them out? (I tried calling our doc but the office is closed for today, plus I doubt they'd do much anyway and I don't want them on antibiotics for a stuffy nose!)

  • You could try a saline solution or saline based nose spray.

I think the current recommendation is really to avoid using decongestants. That said, my doctor swears by Mucinex for me and when my kids are at the 'so stuffy I'm too miserable to do much of anything including sleep' sort of way, we've used Children's Mucinex.
