  • A second hand one but buy a new mattress. Put the extra cash towards long term savings.

  • We bought a beautiful solid wood 3 in 1 a few years ago. It will go from a crib to toddler bed with rail to a full size bed when she is older. The amount of money we spent was worth it, we bought the amoire, and change table/dresser as well. It is of good quality and will last a lifetime. Beats having to buy a different bedroom sets as they get older. But, if you are strapped for cash and need to watch what you spend now, there are several out there. I do not recommend second hand unless they are just a couple years old, safety reasons of course.

  • We were given a second-hand crib for my oldest daughter 20 years ago and used it for all 3 of our children. When we tried to donate it to Goodwill they wouldn't take it. They measured the distance between the slats and said they didn't meet the safety codes and that the age of the crib probably meant that the painted pictures at one end of the crib (of a cute lamb) was probably done in lead paint. We had to throw it out.

My oldest daughter is now expecting a baby and her grandfather gave her money towards a brand new crib. We found an affordable one online at WalMart.com that is a 4-in-1 and we only have to buy the mattress and sheets.
