Rum = Puffy Belly??

My best friend is a heavy Rum drinker. She has puffed up in the last couple of months. I told her to cut back or stop and it will go away. She is upset because she has gained weight. If she stops drinking, will she loose some weight?

  • Probably, but I doubt it's rum-specific. Any alcohol with it's extra calories and inflammatory properties can cause weight gain and/or puffy belly.
    If she's a "heavy rum drinker" as you put it, your concerns may be further reaching then just the weight gain, if you catch my drift.

  • To what I have seen, she is not really eating a lot. She used to be purger.

  • yes, if she drinks a lot then she might drop a few lbs if she stops completely.

    Rum is a very sweet alcohol & has more carbs than some other liquors like Vodka (which is not really made from potatoes anymore). Vodka has no carbs & you can manage to make lighter cocktails with it.

    If you drink too much or anything though, it might add a little to your bulge.

  • If she's not eating, and she used to be a purger, then I'd say her weight gain really is the last thing you should worry about. It sounds likely that she has some serious psychological and/or dependency issues that need to be dealt with.

  • We've been friends for over 20 years now, and it has not always been an easy friendship. She has had eating disorders, she was a cutter which she just stopped doing 4 months ago, and once she stopped cutting she is now drinking a lot.

  • Is she drinking straigh Rum or is she mixing drinks?? A lot of the mixers have a lot of Sugar & that can help pack on the pounds. Ans each 1oz shot has about 65 calories in it. Another thing to remember is that alcohol is actually a depressant, so if you are already depressed then drinking is NOT going to help you feel better.
