WTheck. Made a two layered cake. It's frosted and starting to crack in the middle..

It's literally splitting apart. Never had this happen before. What on earth did I do wrong?

  • When you make a layer cake, always put the more rounded side down on the bottom and up on the top, so that the flatter edges meet together in the middle.

  • I've had cakes that were trimmed even, baked properly, etc, fall apart. Sometimes it's not dense enough, sometimes it's too dense, sometimes too much frosting...there's a lot of reasons it could have cracked. Unless it was for someone, don't fret, it will still taste the same!

  • is it too heavy? Did you wait to frost it??
I guess I don't really know the answer to that one.

  • Did you trim the "hump" off of the layers so it was perfectly flat?

    Did you cool it COMPLETELY?

Did you over cook the cake?

  • Is it possible that you put the tops of the layers together in the center when you layered? Those are the highest points, and will cause a split.

If you have any extra frosting, just cover the crack and the cake with extra frosting layers . . noone will ever know.

  • You over or undercooked it. Also you need to put it together with both flat bottoms together for the middle

  • That has happened to be when I didn't trim it and did not let it cool completely. I know better now lol
