Can ovulation cause a false positive on HPT?

So I have taken 4 home pregnancy tests in the last 2-3 days, 2 of which read positive and 2 read negative. I have reason to believe that I am not pregnant and have possibly been in an ovulation phase the last few days. It is extremely late in my cycle and would be odd for me to be ovulating now, but if I were, could that have caused my HPT's to read positive even if I were not pregnant?

  • the pregnancy tests are looking for a specific hormone found ONLY in pregnancy, NOT ovulation

  • And this is why you should wait until your skipped cycle is over a week past before you pee on a stick. Ovulation can not create a false positive pregnancy test, but the opposite IS true - pregnancy can create a false positive ovulation test.

  • I have always kind of jumped the gun on taking pregnancy tests, but after this whole mess I think I can say lesson learned!

  • I agree with the other mamas....ovulation shouldnt/wouldn't make a pregnancy test positive.....I have a question though what brand tests are you using? Are they the lines or digital?

  • 1. Equate (blue dye, 2 line) 2. First Response (pink dye, 2 line) 3. First Response (pink dye, 2 line) 4. Equate (pink dye, plus/minus)
Tests 1 and 3 gave me the positives. I am unsure about trusting though because the blue dye tests have alot of complaints about giving "false positives" and the FRER positive line began fading about 4 hours after I took the test. By the end of that same day it looked negative.

  • No. The placenta is responsible for making HCG hormone these tests look for. There are a few other reasons women may have hcg in their system, but most often due to pregnancy.
