For those of you totally freaked-out by the potential Gov't. Shutdown...

...and saying things like "it's all Obama's fault";  I thought perhaps a little perspective might be in order...  Here is a list of shutdowns since the 1977 fiscal year:

Ford
Thursday 09-30-76 - Monday 10-11-76

Carter
Friday 09-30-77 - Thursday 10-13-77
Monday 10-31-77 - Wednesday 11-09-77
Wednesday 11-30-77 - Friday 12-09-77
Saturday 09-30-78 - Wednesday 10-18-78
Sunday 09-30-79 - Friday 10-12-79

Reagan
Friday 11-20-81 - Monday 11-23-81
Thursday 9-30-82 - Saturday 10-2-82
Friday 12-17-82 - Tuesday 12-21-82
Thursday 11-10-83 - Monday 11-14-83
Sunday 9-30-84 - Wednesday 10-3-84
Wednesday 10-3-84 - Friday 10-5-84
Thursday 10-16-86 - Saturday 10-18-86
Friday 12-18-87 - Sunday 12-20-87

Bush
Friday 10-5-90 - Tuesday 10-9-90

Clinton
Monday 11-13-95 - Sunday 11-19-95
Friday 12-15-95 - Saturday 1-6-96

As you can see, this has happened before. Many times actually, especially during the Reagan years.  I understand it will affect some people more than others, but given a little history, don't you think people are blowing this out of proportion just a bit?

  • Yes, I agree. Some of these ladies here at CM do not realize...and probably are too young to know that this is not the first time. But they seem to be enjoying yet another opportunity to blame the President for something.
Yikes....it happened a whole lot of times when Reagan was President, huh? How about that?.
    I am not worried.
    Thanks for the statistics!

  • It's not one person's fault either, it's Congress not being able to agree on which programs to cut and which to keep still. That's the holdup, and people don't get it.

  • If I am not mistaken, wasn't the military paid during all of those shutdowns?

Yes... Example, in 1995 when government shutdown for 21 days, Military were paid in full...  Why?  Because the President Clinton issued an Executive Order ahead of the shutdown....  I wonder if Obama will...... Tomorrow?  This entire budget should have been passed in October 2010... Here we are 2011... No Budget...  No OMB guidance ensuring military pay(Reagan).  No executive order (Clinton)...  Here we are.....

  • Growing up in DC- I remember those shut downs- most govt employees used their leave balances to be paid during the shut downs-the difference this time is the media- previous shut downs hardly made the news outside of the DC area-
A shut down is never a good thing, so I am not minimizing them but they are far less scary than people think they are-

  • Thanks! I was actually looking for those dates! My husband apparently lives under a rock and just found out about the potential for a shut down last night... And he's panicked because "Without a government we'll be in Chaos" (yes, he's an idiot). So I was trying to tell him he's lived through quite a few government shut downs in his life - he doesn't believe me!

  • Yes, he's going to get paid. Seriously are all of you who keep saying this watching Fox "News" or something?

Actually, CNN/Blitzer were skyping military families all day yesterday in an attempt to feed the frenzy. Nice try OP. LOL. Cause only Fox News is the problem. How ignorant.

  • It does happen but this could have been avoided had Dems simply passed a budget before Repubs took office. They dragged their feet until this time so they could have this as a political talking point in the 2012 elections. It is political 100 percent and done to make people angry and afraid. It is sad how dirty politics really is.
