Why are peopls so embarrassed about mental disorders?

It seems society has a hard time accepting mental health issues .I do not understand it .Your brain breaks down like the rest of your body.

  • There is a stigma because it is not "testable" like alot of our medical disorders. Fibromyalgia, because it is not testable, also has a similiar stigma.

We now know that alot of mental disorders are actually caused by shortages or overabundance of the neurotransmitter system (dopamine, seratonin, norepinephrine). Eventually, we will have a quick and easy test to check these levels, and mental disorders will be "testable". When this happens, stigma will likely begin to dissipate.

  • it's an old fear dating back from when people didn't live as long and didn't marry for love. The healthier the family the better chance of having a healthy baby to carry the family name. Yes, the body shuts down but when people didn't live as long it was a "big" deal that has never really worn off.

  • I never had a problem with it but my husband has a hard time or HAD A hard time admitting his "quirks" when we first met - I think its how you are raised also - He was raised to not show weakness - and his parents didn't believe in mental illness - they thought it was people making excuses -

  • I think for a lot of people it is still taboo. I think sometimes people are intimidated because they may not know much about it.

  • Because there its still a stigma associated with mental disorders. Either you're crazy or you're faking it. Depression= lazy ass, bipolar= psycho, SAD= winter blues, PPD= baby blues, and everybody just says suck it up and go on with your life! THAT'S why people don't want to announce to everyone that they have a mental disorder. People just say, "Oh, you have a million reasons to be happy- just look at your perfect baby!" or something to that degree, and then they blame you for your illness when it has NOTHING to do with you, it's just the chemicals in your brain aren't just right.
