I haven't had one done, but I've done them and taken them out (as an OR nurse). They use super heavy duty suture and sew your cervix shut. There are a couple ways to do it, but they usually do it like a purse string and just use one long piece. They'll offer some kind of pain relief (either a block directly to the cervix or sometimes a spinal). You may feel crampy afterward (kind of like when you get your pap smear. Someone messing with your cervix makes you feel like that.). When you get to full term, they'll clip it and pull it out. Sorry I can only give you the technical side of it, but that is my only experience with it.
