Any suggestions for starting a flower bed from scratch?

We have a very small area on both sides of our entry way that just has dirt in it.....any suggestions for what i can put in it and how to do it the right way?? there is no barrier between the dirt thats in there and the sidewalk and driveway.....there are some cute rocks that outline the dirt but they are basically flat and don't do much of anything as far as keeping the dirt in. Our house is very old if that gives you an idea of what might look good with a rock sidewalk

  • ok just till the dirt a little bit to get the soil ready for the flowers this also airates (sp?) the soil. i would start out with easy to grow flowers like pansies or mums something that doesn't require a whole lot of up keep. then dig about an inch into the ground place the flower or seeds in then cover it with the soil water them enough to get the soil saturated and woila!! you have flowers!! oh yeah make sure that you water the flowers either very early in the morning or in the evening and in the soil not just over the flowers themselves b/c if you get water on the flowers or leaves and then the sun beats down on them it will scorch them. And get a little bag of miracle grow and follow their easy directions!! i hope this helps!!

  • yeah but not like unmanageable bigger just trim them back if they get out of hand and pull any dead flowers and leaves off as they will soak up all the water for the good flowers. and remember to pull all the weeds around them to and yes it's ok to mix flowers you can ask the people at where ever your gonna buy them from what they would suggest most flowers are ok to mix but some are not compatable with each other so just ask and they will tell you
