Do you make or buy your kids birthday cake?

I was just wondering what other moms did for birthday cakes. Do you make or buy a special one? My kids are 9,6 and almost 4 and I think I have bought maybe 3 or 4 cakes, I have made most myself. I just priced cakes for my sons 4th birthday and it was between 38.00-44.00 for a cake from my local grocery store!! yikes. I think I would rather just make a cake or cupcakes.

For the past 3 years we have lived away from our family and we recently moved back so this is his first "real" party so I was going to get a special Diego cake or something...I don't know I think its a waste of money. Would a homemade cake be ok?

  • I think home-made cakes are wayyy better then store bought. They just taste better, and I think they are fun to make. You could get a book, and do something a little more decorative yourself.

  • My husband is a manager at a grocery store so we always get the girls cakes from there. We always get a 1/2 sheet cake that feeds 48+ people and its only $24

  • I agree...I love to bake, I'm just not that artistic with decorating. I could pick up a birthday decorating kit and just make something cute like that!!

  • I have made all of our birthday cakes so far. My oldest DD is 3 and my youngest DD will be 1 this year. Nothing wrong with a store bought cake though :o) I do homemade ones because it is something my mom did for my brother and I. My mom has since passed away. I feel like the homemade adds a little specialness.

  • I buy them. I go to a bakery that's really great with both the taste and decorations. Usually ends up costing about $60 to $100 depending on the design.

  • I always made my kids Bday cakes and now my daughters are making their kids Bday cakes. It means so much more to the child that you put the time and energy into it even if you are not very creative. Its so much easier these days with all the things they have out there to help with decorating. And a whole lot cheaper to make your own.
