How much money do you think you saved breastfeeding?

So out of curiosity I calculated how much it would have cost me to formula feed & it rung up to a whopping $4,000!!!! Thank you boobies lol!!

  • well since we have 5 kids, I would say a ton. So if 1 kid would cost about 4000 in formula, then 5 would be about 20000 in formula alone, plus the health care cost since kids who are not breastfed on average get sicker more often... so probably at least enough to send one of the kids to college.

  • mompam.... not sure why you say there is a cost to BF. we were given a pump by a friend, so that is free, and I made reusable pads so that was about 20. And I bought 4 bras at about $12 each and they have lasted through all 5 kids. Sure you can make it as expensive as you want I guess. Regardless, kids who are breastfed have lower health care bills then those who are formula fed (talking about large scale studies, not individual children). So there is more then formula to figure in on cost.

  • WOW! I breastfed for 10 months so I know I saved a lot... I can't imagine how much it will add up to when I have 2 kids! Hubby always tells me that we can't afford not to breastfeed, and I'm not arguing!

  • Considering that you do not *need* a pump (wee have hands, no?), you do not *need* specialized bras, nor do you need disposable pads- those are ALL convenience items. You do not need bottles- again, convenience item. Breastfeeding costs ZERO- if you *choose* to make it cost, anything will.

I can't imagine, with as much as formula costs now even compared to 4-5 years ago, how much it would cost for me to give malnutrition to a child.

  • At least that much! Plus, he so rarely got sick then, it saved us from going to the doctor. He is also lactose intolerant, so we would have had to pay for soy formula. Plus, I would have been devastated had I not been able to nurse him, and seeing a therapist for post-partum depression isn't cheap. Yeah, breastfeeding was worth it in so many ways!!
