What kind of litterbox is good for messy cats?

For example, my cats "miss" sometimes, and get poop on the floor. I am trying to eliminate this problem, and I am wondering what kind of litter/litterbox I should be buying? Any suggestions?

  • I had a maine coon, and she was just really too big for even the large litterboxes. I used one of those Rubbermaid storage containers with sides that were around 4-5" high. Eliminated the problem of litter spread everywhere. I would imagine the same would do for poop due to the length.

  • We got an oversized one with a lid, since one of our cats kept peeing off the edge. The top needs cleaning from time to time, but it has worked well for a couple years.

  • We get the cheap totes at Home Depot and cut out an opening for the cats to go in. They will even use it with the lid on. Mine always had problems with the far edge and hanging over. This has eliminated that problem.

  • A covered one should work? That's what I use (well, my cat uses.LOL)
